How to Choose the Right Toothpaste for Your Teeth

Choosing the right toothpaste is an important part of taking good oral care. We’re always reminded of how crucial flossing and brushing are, but have you considered what toothpaste you choose?

The store has so many different toothpaste options that it can be overwhelming. You might catch yourself walking the aisles wondering, “Which toothpaste is right for me?” Today, we will discuss the different types of toothpaste and how to find the right one based on your dental needs.

“I’ve been a dentist for over 20 years, and in that time, I’ve probably tested dozens of toothpaste products. Recently, a patient asked me to recommend a toothpaste.  That’s a tough question because there are so many brands and types of toothpaste on the market.  My answer began with a question, “What are the patient’s dental needs?” Choose a toothpaste for your specific needs, like protection or whitening, while ensuring the toothpaste won’t damage your teeth chemically or abrasively. You use your toothpaste at least twice a day, so the brand and type of toothpaste you use is an important decision.  So important that I decided to write this blog.”

Understanding the Basics: What’s in Your Toothpaste?

Most toothpaste contains a few key ingredients that help keep your teeth clean and strong:

  • Abrasives: These abrasives help remove debris and surface stains from your teeth.
  • Humectants: This is added to toothpaste to prevent it from drying out or getting gummy.
  • Flavoring Agents: This affects the taste of your toothpaste. Most of the time, they add sweetness and a minty scent.
  • Thickening Agents and Detergent: These help stabilize the toothpaste formula while adding a foaming effect.

Which is the Right Toothpaste for Your Teeth?

If You Need Help with Cavity Prevention: Go Fluoride-Fortified

Fluoride is an additive to toothpaste that assists with cavity prevention. It is an essential ingredient if you have a history of cavities or tooth decay. Toothpaste with fluoride also helps strengthen your enamel, ensuring your teeth stay strong.

If You Have Sensitive Teeth: Try a Desensitizing Formula

If you feel pain when eating hot or cold foods or flossing and brushing your teeth, you might need desensitizing toothpaste. Toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth contains potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride, which helps block nerve signals and reduce discomfort.

If You Want Whiter Teeth: Look for a Whitening Toothpaste

Whitening toothpaste contains ingredients safe for stain removal, including hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and more. These toothpastes are a great way to brighten your smile at home. However, they won’t provide as dramatic whitening results as professional treatments.

If You Need Help with Gum Health: Choose an Antibacterial Toothpaste

Use an antibacterial toothpaste if you have a history of gingivitis, gum pain, bleeding, and inflammation. Ingredients like stannous fluoride or triclosan help fight bacteria that contribute to gum disease. Pairing the right toothpaste with proper flossing and regular dental visits can significantly improve gum health.

Additional Tips for Picking the Right Toothpaste

  • Look for the ADA Seal of Approval: Remember to choose a toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Approval. The American Dental Association has a list of toothpaste and oral health products it deems safe and effective. When you’re in the store, look for a seal that says “ADA Accepted.”
  • Ask Dr. Dalton: Still unsure which toothpaste is the right for your teeth? Ask Dr. Dalton! Dr. Dalton is always here to answer questions or concerns about choosing the right products for oral health.
